Ashley Gilbertson, an Australian freelance photographer on assignment for the New York Times, was sitting in an ordinary sedan by the side of the road near the famous ziggurat in Samarra last week when a black BMW pulled up with two Iraqis he had never seen before. They stopped so close that he could smell their breath. “Salaam aleikum,” Gilbertson said. They made no reply. “They’re going to kill us,” Gilbertson’s Iraqi driver said.

Within seconds the Iraqis were leaning out their windows with AK-47s, opening fire as Gilbertson’s vehicle sped away. Somehow, the attackers missed and no one was hurt, but the BMW chased them down the highway until they reached the safety of an American patrol. The attackers’ motive: “They just realized it was a perfect chance to hit another foreigner,” Gilbertson said.
